Living in Harmony with Nature

Nature has blessed mankind with her bounty. We must learn to live in harmony with Mother Earth and her creatures by using, recycling and replenishing the resources incisively. Keeping in mind the above responsibility, East Point School initiated a project on the theme ‘Living in Harmony with Nature’ for classes VI and VII. The goals of this exploration are to provide opportunities for children to closely observe life around them, build an understanding about what is living and non-living, develop inquiring skills along with scientific dispositions including curiosity and delight in being a young naturalist.

Nature Walk

‘By bringing nature into our lives, we invite humility’- Keeping this in mind, the students of class VI and VII were taken for a ‘Nature Walk’ in the school premises to observe the rich flora and fauna we have in there. The Nature Walk program is our invite to the curious and observant naturalist within all of us. During the walk, the students explored and identified 35 different types of plants and 10 types of animals they came across in the premises. Doing so, they not only broadened their knowledge about herbs, shrubs and trees but also added a perspective of responsibility to it.

Research Activity

After recording the names of rich flora and fauna successfully, the students gathered and compiled more information about the various species they explored during the Nature Walk. This helped them to stimulate their interest and inspire exploration towards our biodiversity and ecosystem. It was a great opportunity to talk to the children about conservation and reinforce the values of being respectful towards nature.

Recording of Facts

Being with nature always helps to learn more. After gathering information through the Nature Walk, the students of class VI and VII recorded the facts for the future references. This not only helped them to verify their observation about each plant and animal but also broadened their scope of knowledge about the biodiversity. This brain storming activity also embellished their critical thinking, presentation as well as interpersonal skills.

Leaf Painting

‘Autumn Fall is a great time to teach the young students about changing seasons and science of leaves’. Keeping in mind the above statement, students of class VI assimilated about leaves in a fun way manner. They made different designs using various types of leaves. They even painted the leaves in desired colors using paint brush over them in order to create their own designs by pressing those leaves on blank paper. The objective of this activity was to make them aware about different types of leaves, their structure, texture, size and understand the indispensable value of leaves. Along with this they also learnt using them creatively.
